THE MOTHER OF TODAY, NOW FILTERED THROUGH THE LENS OF SOCIAL MEDIA.

Extended Description:

This piece reinterprets Raphael Sanzio’s The Virgin and Child with a Book (1503) through a contemporary lens, highlighting the often distorted reality of modern motherhood. In this version, the sacred relationship between mother and child is presented alongside the trivialities of social media, where the mother, wearing her brand and surrounded by the image of perfection, seems more concerned with her online presence than the reality of raising her child. A critical reflection on how modern parenting is influenced by the pursuit of validation and the illusion of perfection found online.

About the Original Work:
Raphael Sanzio (1483–1520), one of the most revered artists of the Italian Renaissance, created The Virgin and Child with a Book in 1503, presenting the Virgin Mary and the Christ child in a serene and contemplative setting. In this iconic piece, Raphael beautifully captured the calm and intimate bond between mother and child, with the Virgin depicted as a symbol of grace and wisdom. The book she holds represents knowledge and divine wisdom. This work exemplifies the Renaissance ideals of balance, harmony, and the sacredness of motherhood.
